Slipping up on an banana skin is a standard slapstick gag. It’s the stuff of cartoons with no more basis in reality than Wiley Coyote running off the edge of a cliff and not realising he’s suspended in mid-air until he looks down.

Or so I thought.

I was crossing a busy street a couple of days ago, totally concentrated on avoiding the speeding cars. This particular stretch of road seems to attract large number of drivers who consider stopping at pedestrian crossingsto be optional. Suddenly I found myself sprawled across the tarmac (I think it was on one of the white stripes of the crossing) wondering what had hit me. Turned out it was a banana skin.

Not a big deal in itself, especially as I escaped with only minor bruising to my right ankle and my pride. Yet it got me thinking. Why had this freakishly cartoon incident happened?

Here’s what I came up with.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

(Gandhi)

This quote sums up my approach to life. My aspired approach to life, that is. I’ve still got some way to go as the truth is, at the age of 46, I’m still unlearning a lot of accumulated rubbish from my first 35 years.

Since choosing to cut meat from my diet nearly two years ago I’ve moved from being somewhat tentative about it to becoming convinced this is the right lifestyle choice for me. Over recent months I’ve even started getting a bit evangelical about it.
So, yes, the purpose of this article is to convert any meatarian readers.
Don’t worry though.
I’m not going to resort to any of the manipulative tactics used by many militant vegetarians. I’m not going to use them, not because I’m a warm, respectful guy, but because they simply don’t …

My business life as a trainer and coach is all about helping people learn and I’ve been doing it for many years now. I think I’m pretty good at it and one way I keep ‘in shape’, as it were, is to take my own self development and learning very seriously.
Since my mid thirties one thing I do is take on a new learning project every couple of years. Currently I’m learning how to build and maintain my physical health, before that it was …

Don’t human beings just love dividing the world up? Everywhere you go it seems there are lines drawn to make the world into smaller and smaller pieces. Most of those lines are created by us and are not ‘real’ in the sense they only exist because we decide to make them.
When you’re finally up at the moon looking back on earth, all those differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend, and you’re going to get a concept that maybe this really is …
